Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a colorless thermoplastic.

History:

Polymethyl methacrylate was developed around 1930, at about the same time in Germany, Great Britain and Spain, and was brought to market in 1933. One of the first everyday products were covers for radio record player combinations Braun SK 4.

Structure and properties:

PMMA is produced by polymerization of the monomeric methacrylic acid methyl ester.

  • Good machining possible
  • Easily deformable
  • Transmits light better than normal glass
  • Weather and ageing resistant
  • Elastic and impact-resistant
  • Multicolor plastics

Areas of application : 

Glazing, reflectors, light guides, floodlight signs, light covers, light advertising, industrial door glazing, furniture, roofing, greenhouses, sanitary objects
